Special Education

Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise is an option 2 member of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA). Charter schools authorized by LAUSD are bound by and must adhere to the terms, conditions, and requirements of the Chanda Smith Modified Consent Decree. This includes participating in LAUSD’s District Validation Review (DVR) to evaluate compliance with special education regulations. LAAAE’s most recent DVR was conducted in school year 2018-2019. As of August 2019, Approximately 11% of LAAAE students qualify for special education services.

LAAAE’s onsite special education team consists of a Special Education Coordinator and two Special Education Paraprofessionals. Counseling, psychology, and mental health support is provided through LAAAE’s Student Services team. LAAAE contracts with outside agencies to provide onsite speech/language therapy, nursing, and other services LAAAE students need.

Students with disabilities, per Federal law, are provided the least restrictive environment and are included with their non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate according to the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Students are provided with the necessary materials, services, and equipment to support their learning. If a parent or faculty member believes the student’s educational needs are not being met, a reassessment or a review of the IEP by the IEP team may be requested at any time during the year.
